On This Day: June 19 2020

From June 4 2020 to June 18 2020, the collective posted a series of photos with quotes from songs included on their first album Sundowning. On this day in 2020, they posted a teaser video with a piano track that was the room below version of Blood Sport.

The quotes were as follows:

  • XVI | The light of the sunrise
  • XV | This is a giving, an offering
  • XIV | Forgetting the agony again
  • XIII | Omens in your skies
  • XII | You need a melody
  • XI | Won’t you wait for me
  • X | I just want to give
  • IX | Like fire from the heavens
  • VIII | Show me what you do
  • VII | I am yours tonight
  • VI | As we lie down together
  • V | I can’t win
  • IV | So let’s play
  • III | Even if you won’t believe me
  • II | I’ll only hurt you if you let me
  • I | And the sun begins to fade

Music Release: Nazareth, June 19 2017

On This Day: June 19 2017

Seven years ago this day, Sleep Token released Nazareth as the second single of their EP “Two”. The EP was released in full July 21 2017.

At this time, the only promotional evidence curated is this post on the site formerly known as Twitter, directing to a now deleted Basick Records post.

Nazareth cover image from the single release on Spotify when using this link.

The title on this image appears to be “Nazareth” using the written Arabic language but with each letter reversed. While researching this single, the image above also appears reversed on Discogs and on Spotify. The proper way to write out Nazareth in Arabic is “الناصرة”.

Per this source, this song was produced by George Lever. The writers credited are Vessel I and Vessel II. Vessel is shown as the performer for vocals, guitar, bass, and piano. Drums show II is listed.

Any additional information, or resources, from that time frame regarding this single release is welcome. As is any correction of the aforementioned.

Returning to 2019, the collective changed their profile photo as well as their cover/banner photo. This coincided with a teaser video posted to their Facebook page featuring the intro to The Night Does Not Belong To God and the runes for all the songs on their first album, Sundowning. Thus begins the lead up to the full album release in November 2019.

So soon after updating the collective’s Facebook, Twitter, and likely Instagram profile photos, they chose to update again on this day in 2019. This time to the iconic, well known and well beloved complete and final sigil/symbol.

While theories and speculation abound, it is not truly known what this sigil stands for, and what runes make up the whole. This curator does have a favorite of those read so far in the archiving journey, and it is the theory linked here.

As always with the intentions of the vessel, it is perhaps another part of knowing Sleep Token and embracing the meanings of the imagery and songs as our own.

Once again should you, fellow follower, have further information, please reach out and educate. As always, it is appreciated.

The start of a new era for Sleep Token as everything was gearing up for the coming release of their first LP. On this day in 2019 Facebook received an updated profile photo.

There was also an updated banner.

While Twitter does not show changes to profile photos unless the user so chooses to share, it can be theorized that these updates also occurred on their other social media platforms, such as Instagram.

To this curator’s knowledge, and those in the circle of researchers and archivists this curator belongs to, this era also began the beautiful pattern of utilizing Andy Ford for the collective’s promotional photography. If you, friend, know differently, please educate by messaging here on this Tumblr, on Instagram, or by email at sleeptokenarchive@gmail.com. It would be much appreciated.

Sleep Token debuted onstage the new mask and epaulette/pauldron created by Hysteria Machine at the Greenfield Festival in Switzerland on June 8 2023. The new mask and pauldron were previously used in May’s promotional material for the release of their new album, Take Me Back To Eden (2023).

Today in 2023 was the first day it made a physical appearance and showed up in concert footage and photography.

Photos by Adamrosssi originally posted on Facebook.

Further research has shown that a correction is necessary. The epaulette/pauldron, also created by Hysteria Machine, actually debuted January 17 2023 at the Birmingham ritual. The mask is the only part of the costume/regalia that was new to the stage on June 8 2023.
